2018 First Camping trip to Campobello Island

Mulholland Lighthouse

During memorial day holiday weekend, I booked a 3 days 2 night trip to Campobello Island NB Canada.  Since it's a holiday weekend in US, most campground is fully booked.  Our last min decision to go camping won't work out if we stay within US.  Luckily, the campground in Canada is wide open and in early season.  I'm able to book a 2 night at Herring Cove Provincial Park Campground.

Day 1 - May 26 Sat

We left our home around 3pm.  Due to weekend kids activities, we need to wait till 2pm before ready to hit the road.  The drive to Campobello Island is about 6 1/2 hrs.  I have to stop prior to Bangor ME for fuel.  While stopping for fuel, we also stock up our food/drink at the local supermarket.  New Brunswick Canada is not on EST, but rather AST.  AST is -4 while EST is -5.  We lose 1 hour when crossing into Campobello Island.

We arrived at the campground around 12am and quickly setup our tent in pitch dark.  We all squeeze tight together inside the tent and try to get some rest.

Day 2 - May 27 Sun

We start out the day by waking up early and try to watch sunrise at the horizon.  At 4:30am, me and Jackie wake up and left the kids in the tent.  We went out and hoping to catch sunrise.  Campobello Island has one of the best sunset and sunrise view.   We jump on the truck and head out to Schooner Cove.   Here is some of the sunrise capture

After a relax sunrise moment (busy with capturing sunrise photo/video & drone video), we continue to drive around the island.  Campobello island is a very small island.  Instead of heading back to campground, we opt to drive around.  At this time, the tide is low.  We continue to swing by a few spot to capture more drone video and photos.

Breakfast in progress

Breakfast almost ready

Due to early season, not all campsite has power.  Our campsite is powerless.  I have to find the camp keeper so they can turn on the breaker for our campsite.  After some hearty breakfast, we head out.  Our first stop is Mill Cove and Mill Cove Pond.  We drive to Mill Cove via Fundy Dr.   We are at Mill Cove around 12pm.  At this time, the tide is still high.  Low tide is at 4pm.  At Mill Cove, if you have ATV or 4x4, you can drive on the rocky bank where separate the Mill Cove Pond with the beach.  I drove my truck to the end of the rocky bank to avoid crowd (crowd means 1 car stop by).

My partner in crime want to do tide pooling and clam/mussel digging.  Since it's still high tide, we opt to come back when the tide is low.  So we head out after 1pm.  We went to Head Harbor Lighthouse.  Since it's still high tide, there is no access to the lighthouse.  Sea water covered the path to walk to the light house.  There is some interesting observation.  Where opposite current meet, it's create a Whirlpool.  The old sow whirlpool is the largest whirlpool in the western hemisphere.  It's located between deer island NB and eastport ME.  It's just a hop from Campobello Island.

After lighthouse visit, we opt to return to campground and make some lunch and short nap.  We wait till 4:30pm before we head back to Mill Cove again.

Low tide, the island can be accessible.

After catching some fresh catch, we head out to capture some sunset photo.  I capture the sunset photo of mulholland lighthouse and also one of the hidden spot.
