Here is some gotcha from the trip.
- My pre-select campsite at Prince Edward Island was not as perfect. It has good shade, but behind some unmanaged bush. It's a mosquitoes breading heaven. During early morning, the mosquito level was not as high (cold morning) until 9am. After 9am, you can see swamp of mosquitoes lingering on my SUV and trailers. We are getting bitten alive by mosquitoes !!!!
- Setting up the pop-up camper in the rain is not an easy task. I do set a good speed record to pop the camper and getting the camper ready for the family. I'm lucky to pre-select a shady camp site, in which, become my lucky charm as I didn't get as wet.
- Driving overnight is not an easy task. I'm sole responsible to keep the family safe from any incident or accident. I have to be awake and try to keep awake during 4am is not an easy task. Trying to keep awake after a whole day of activities also in not an easy task. Most research will say Moose is the most dangerous animal on the highway. Driving in Newfoundland during night time is really not an easy task. I'm scare of my life and pray for our family safety. I didn't encounter huge animal, but did kill a wild rabbit. Newfoundland weather can change rapidly. Driving in Fog (From Rocky Harbor to St Antony route) is very dangerous.
- Black flies. My family got tons of bites from black flies at Terra Nova National Park. Insect repellent don't do any help to prevent it. On one of our hiking path, we were surrounded by black flies and we run for it.
- I destroy one trailer tires on this trip. I wasn't aware of the problem until we reach home. If we had to travel another 500 miles, I would guaranteed the trailer tires blow up and might lead to a serious accident. The picture below show the wear on one of the trailer tires. I'm not sure what happen here, but I do check the vehicle condition from time to time. This is to ensure the vehicle is in top notch shape to travel. In additional to excessive tire thread wear on the trailer tire, I also have excessive tire thread wear on my SUV. My rear tires has uneven wear (look like under-inflated tires wear). It wasn't as bad as the trailer tire, but it was enough to affect my driving in heavy rain. My SUV is not Full-time AWD. It's 4WD. I have to engage 4WD to drive in rain. Due to tires uneven wear, I lost traction to the rear wheel. I have to compensate with my front wheel (more tire thread). With 4WD engaged, I suffered a few MPG.
- Driving overnight in Newfoundland. Not all gas station is open 24 hrs. From Deer Lake, NL to Port Aux Basques, the only gas station open can be found in Deer Lake & Corner Brook. If you passed Corner Brook, there will be no Gas Station. Diesel is fine as some fuel station will turn on Diesel pump for commercial vehicle. From Terra Nova National Park, I fuel up the gas tank before leaving. Then the next fuel up is at Deer Lake. There is a Irving Gas station (Big Stop) in Deer Lake open 24 hours.
- Terra Nova National Park. There is no gas station within the National Park area. The closest gas station is about 10 miles away from the visitor center (Traytown or Glovertown). 15 miles from the Newman Sound Campground.
- Awning. If anyone put the awning out, please be sure to be closeby the campground. When we camping near the beach in PEI, the windy beach almost destroy our owning setup. The strong wind blown off the awning set. Luckily, the awning did not sustain any damages. It was just the attachment got blown off. That day, we drove off to North Cape. We were out till as late as 10:30pm. Once we arrived back to our campsite, we saw the awning blown off and can't access the door.
