| My 7889 miles in 17.5 days |
I will be returning to LCDC event in 2021. This year, the event is host at Ouray, CO from July 28 till Aug 1. I have campground reservation at Amplitheater campground from Junly 28-Aug1. This event is a sold out event with waiting list. I'm happy to return and will be leading a trail ride again. This will be a solo trip and I will try to extend the trip to do some sightseeing.
More info of the event https://www.landcruiserdc.com/
As usual, I will not have any planning for the trip. We have done several trip without full planning. This trip will be the same. I do have some POI to visit.
Part 1
My 17.5 days roadtrip picture/video.
I left MA after work on July 22. Drive overnight to VA. I only stop for gas and leg stretching. Around 3am, I arrived Front Royal VA and hop onto Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park.
There is no planning for this trip. I usually just decide my next destination last min. I do have a destination to reach and commitment to attend an event. I need to arrive Ouray CO on Jul 28 and checkin to my campground. I also need to attend LCDC 2021 in Ouray CO starting in Jul 28 till Aug 1. I have 6 days to roam freely.
I want to watch sunrise hence I decided to watch it at some lookout area on Skyline drive. I'm luck out and able to catch the sunrise. Almost miss the moment as I doze off.
Driving on Skyline drive during night/dawn is a bit dangerous. There is tons of wildlife and speed need to be slow. I have good lighting hence I'm able to see wildlife before they hop infront of my vehicle. I see tons of deers/bambi and rabbits.

From WV, visited Bardstown in KY. Next is TN to visit a friend. In Nashville, I got to try out some hot chicken. Hattie B’s is famous so I stop by a store before hop on Natchez Trace Parkway.

Part 3 - continue driving south on Natchez Trace Parkway till Jackson MS. Hop onto I-20 west toward Louisiana & Texas.
Drive whole day in Texas bypass Dallas. Want to try BBQ and select Salt Lick is my choice of BBQ restaurant. Due to timing, I can’t make it to Driffwood TX, but able to arrive in Round Rock TX store. Order beef rib and bison rib platter for dinner. Also try the dessert, peach cobbler + blackberry shortcake.
Bypass Austin/San Antonio and hop onto I-10 toward Fort Stockton TX. My destination is Big Bend National Park.

Part 4 - Big Bend National Park
102 F weather in the desert. Skinny dip into the hot springs pool. I have plan to enjoy the hot spring, but the pool looks dirty. Hot water pouring out of the source is fresh and hot. The pool is accessible via a dirt road and 0.25 miles hike from the parking area.
Continue exploring toward the border between US & Mexico. Found 2 friendly horses relaxing on the roadside. There is a few souvenir shop/vendor scattering around the border area. It's honest system purchase (no price negotiation). You can purchased any souvenir by deposit the purchased onto the collection bucket/bottle/tub.
Beside desert area, big bend national park has a highland section. I drive up twisty road toward highland. The weather from the plain vs highland is at least 20f differences. The highland has a lodge, a campground, & visitor center.
After highland visit, I return to the desert plain and exit the national park to a ghost town, Terlingua. Got lost in Terlingua, but just another excuses to drive off the path around the town. After a short visit to Terlingua, I head back to Big Bend National Park. Instead of driving paved road, I decided to take a dirt road short cut. Old Maverick Rd is a dirt road shortcut from the west entrance toward Santa Elena Canyon. This area probably the most scenic area. I parked at the parking area and hike closer to the canyon.

Part 5
Part 5 - After Santa Elena Canyon hike, it’s time to checkin to my remote primitive camp spot.
It was Sunday when I arrived Big Bend National Park. Due to Covid restriction, campground booking is only online (recreation dot gov) and no availability. But some primitive camp spot only available FCFS basis. You will need a permit to camp and this permit only available at the visitor center. Acquired the permit from a ranger at the visitor center (panther junction) for $10 per night. I know which camp spot to request and specifically request the location I wanted. Buenos Aires is the site name.
To access Buenos Aires, you need to drive 20+ mins on a gravel road, River Road. It’s a bumpy, dusty gravel road run mostly near river bed or on River bed. If there is rain in forecast, I’ll avoid this road as flash flood is eminent and you will get stuck in between. You will need high clearance 4x4 as some river bed washout is pretty deep. I can count at least 3 washout is pretty deep.
Arrived at Buenos Aires and get ready to setup camp for tonight. Awning deployed and sleeping tent under the awning. This camp site is near Rio Grande River. On the higher ground plateau, I can see 360 surrounding. Camping in hot desert need a lot of hydration. I drink as much water as possible and Gatorade to keep me hydrate.
I have plenty of food and water. I also have a refrigerator to keep food fresh and drink chilled.
One night camping, I got to see beautiful sunset, dark sky with Milky Way and awesome sunrise. Truth to tell, I cheated a bit. I did sleep inside my truck with AC on for 2 hrs. After temp lowered down to under 90, I crawl into my tent and rest till some cow mooing, dog barking & coyote howling wake me up.
Next morning, I packed up and ready to leave big bend national park. I took an easy and scenic route (I bypass this scenic drive yeasterday). Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive is beautiful. Don’t miss this scenic drive when visit big bend national park.

Part 6
Part 6 - leaving Big Bend National Park
I’m planning to take FM170 to Presidio TX. This is a road driving through Big Bend Ranch State Park along Rio Grande River. First stop is the visitor center. At the visitor center restroom, I found a iPhone 12 and I hand it over to the park ranger. That my good deed for that day.
I continue to drive along Farm to Market Road 170 toward Presidio TX. I stop for scenic picture moment. Big Bend Ranch State Park is another beautiful area which worth a stop. Along this road, it’s quiet and less tourist. I seen more border patrol vehicle than tourist. It’s a fun drive. Got a good view of US/Mexico border, aka Rio Grande River. Arrived Presidio TX and turn right (left turn will bring me to the border crossing to Ojinaga Mexico).
I head north from this point. Driving along US67, I come to a stop. All northbound vehicle need to stop at the border patrol station. After greet by border patrol and we had a good chat about my Garmin inreach, I was allow to continue my journey.
My next destination is Marfa TX. I stop at a rest stop and had my lunch (PBJ). There is a unique display, Prada Marfa, 26 miles North west of Marfa. Finding a Prada shop display in nowhere along US90. The shop has lastest Prada product on display. Surrounding the shop, there is a lot of padded lock on the fence, aka love locks. A unique must stop if you in the area.
I continue northbound toward NM. I usually choose what attraction to stop. There is always wish list, but due to timing, I had to move on. While driving North, I can see many storm brewing close by. Guadalupe National Park is on my path. I stopped by the visitor center and enjoyed the display. Another awesome spot to stop. After a short stop, I continue to head north. I wish to stop at carlsbad caverns, but I can’t secure a ticket for the day. Between the border of Texas, I finally got hit by a freak hail storm. Instead of stopping on the road, I choose to drive through the hail storm ASAP. That’s a wise choice as I’m outside the storm in just mins instead of hours. The sky open up and sun popping out as I’m cross into New Mexico. Next stop on part 7 - Roswell NM.

Part 7
Part 7 - Arriving Roswell NM. When mothership calling, you’re here to find the mothership.
I spend a little time exploring Roswell NM. Since I arrived late in afternoon, the UFO museum is closed. I parked on the Main Street and walk around to town. There are many unique store with alien theme. I also visited the infamous McDonald store.
Originally, I have intention to stay overnight at Roswell NM. I was looking for hotel room, but soon after I found a good camp site, I change my mind to camp in the wild for another night. Since my food/water is running low, I found a Walmart and replenished my supplies. I got food, water and more drinks.
I drove 20 miles west of Roswell NM to enter Lincoln National Forest. Baca Campground is a free campground sitting in Lincoln National Forest. I need to drive about 7 miles off the paved road. On the way to the campground, I found a flock of Elk.
I reach the campground and found a spot. There are a few campers here, but we all spread far apart. Cook dinner and settle down for the night. Since I’m camping in elevation of 6400 ft, the temp is nice and cool. A huge change from camping in the desert.
Next morning, I packed up and ready to depart toward Colorado. On my way out, I found the same flock of elk again glazing on a open plain. Hop onto paved road and head north. I bypassed Albuquerque and Santa Fe. I stopped for gas in Las Vegas NM before arriving in Colorado.
Colorado is the midpoint of my journey/trip. I quickly exit the highway and find a less travel road. From Trinidad CO, I hop onto Scenic byway Colorado Highway 12, aka Highway of Legends. I’m heading toward Medano Pass to enter Great Sand Dunes National Park.
Part 8
Part 8 - Great Sand Dunes National Park. After taking the scenic route, I arrived the starting point for Medano Pass primitive road off Colorado State Highway 69.
A little background about Medano Pass Primitive road. This is a 4x4 trail, 22 miles road. The road reach Medano Pass at 10040 ft. Along the road, there is dedicated 21 primitive campspot available as First come, First served and free to use. This is beside the establish campground found in Great Sand Dunes National Park.
I used the Medano Pass primitive road to enter Great Sand Dunes National Park. Due to limited time, I didn’t spend too much time at the sand dunes. It’s highly recommended to everyone to spend time climbing the huge sand dunes. You can also slide down the dunes if you have a board. It was around 4-5pm and I’m trying to get closer to Ouray. As I leaving the area and head west, I found a spot to stay for the night. I continue to drive west to reach Creede CO. I didn’t tour Creede, but I will return in future for more exploration. Creede is a mining town with lots of history.
What a great camp spot off a country road in Rio Grande National Forest. The elevation of this camping area is around 9280ft. I’m on top of a hill overlooking the Rio Grande Valley. The 360 view is awesome. There are a few campers nearby, but again, we all spread far apart. The location also have good cell coverage as the cell tower is not far away. I cooked my dinner and start chillin for the night.
It’s a bit chill in the morning. After having a quick breakfast, I start my final leg to reach Ouray CO. This morning, I have 2 routes to reach my destination. Both route has awesome view.
Route 1 - Stony Pass to Silverton
Route 2 - Alpine Loop to Ouray
I choose route 2 for specific reason. As I drive from Creede to Lake City, I stop by North Clear Creek Falls. I drive on CO149 north to Lake City. The drive is beautiful with awesome view of San Juan Peaks. I drive through 2 10000+ ft pass, Spring Creek Pass & Slumgullion Pass. Prior to reach Lake City, I turn left into Alpine Loop (cinnamon pass).
Alpine Loop is a famous 4x4 scenic loop/historic byway. The whole loop is 65 miles. I only travel the southern part. I travel from Lake City to Ouray. Alternative, you can also hop on Alpine loop via Silverton & Ouray. My route take me to Cinnamon Pass, California Pass, hurricane Pass & Corkscrew Pass. I will reach US550, aka Million Dollars Highway. From US550, I will drive north to reach Ouray CO.

Part 9
Part 9 - US550, aka Million Dollar Highway section
A little background of Million Dollar Highway. This is a 25 miles paved two-lane road stretch between Silverton CO and Ouray CO. It’s one of the most beautiful roads in America. Also one of the most dangerous road. The road is without guardrail with steep edge/cliffsides and sharp hairpin turn. The view along this highway is breathtaking.
Exiting corkscrew gulch onto US550. I’m halfway on the famous Million dollar highway heading north. I’m about 9 miles from the mountain town, Ouray CO. Ouray CO also known as Switzerland of America. A small mountain town, surrounded by high mountain. My first visit to Ouray is in summer 2018. Love at first visit. Even the town is small, but it packed with many activities. Our family has some awesome time in this town. Back in summer 2018, I towed my trailer to Ridgway and camped for 3 days. We went off-roading with my Toyota Sequoia up Alpine Loop. We relaxing at the Ouray Hotspring.
When I had a chance to return to Ouray CO, I signed up quickly. I booked a 4 days campground near the town. I’m luck out to secure a camping spot at amphitheater campground. I also sign up an event, Land Cruiser Destination Club 2021, hosted in this beautiful town. As like last event, I volunteer as a trail leader and will be leading a group of Land Cruiser onto the scenic trail, Alpine Loop. This is also my reason to take the route through Alpine Loop. It’s my duty to pre-run the trail and be familiar with the surrounding.

Part 10 - Land Cruiser Destination Club
LCDC host event for the last 7 years. It’s a group of passionate owner of Land Cruiser 200 series gathering for some offroad fun. Starting from 8 vehicles on year 1 till now about 90+ vehicles on year 7. The normal event hosted in CO.
For the 2nd year, I attended the event hosted by LCDC. 2020, the event is hosted in Fort Collin CO. For 2021, the event is hosted in Ouray CO. Since I’m solo at the event, I volunteer to help out at the event. When the event need trail leader, I volunteer. It was great as I’ve learn a lot.
For 2021, I sign up for 3 days of trail ride fun. I will lead for 1 day while I will try to learn for 2 days. I haven’t run Imogene pass and Black Bear Pass before, hence I would rather be a participant then leading a group. I do have some experience on Alpine Loop. I’m schedule to lead on the last day to Alpine Loop.
Summer weather in Ouray is like FL. There is afternoon thunderstorms which normally last no more than 2 hrs. For the duration in Ouray, it’s been raining mostly afternoon or evening every day. The thunderstorm usually bring good lightning show and roaring thunder.
Day 1 - Imogene Pass. I sign up to participate with a group lead by Slee Offroad. We did the reverse direction from Telluride to Ouray. That was a great day. I love the scenic on this trail. Thanks for a great day of trail ride lead by Slee Offroad Crews. Thanks
Jackson Philby leading the group.
Day 2 - Black Bear Pass. I sign up to participate with a group lead by a friend,
Geoff Silver. Also another great day to experience the trail from Ouray to Telluride. First time running this trail. Definitely has fear of driving downhill. I just need to ignore my fear of height and Wing IT.
Day 3 - Modified Alpine Loop - original plan for doing a full Alpine Loop get spoiled by weather. There is multiple mud slide in the surrounding causing road close. With limited road access, we did a small loop (more technical route). Starting from Ouray, we take mineral creek up to Poughkeepsie gulch and turn back toward US-550 via Hurricane Pass & Corkscrew Pass. I lead a group of 4 and have a great day of fun.
Part 11
Part 11 - For the next several days, I hang out with
Jim Smola. We had some awesome time exploring in Ouray, Silverton & Moab.
First, this is an impromptu meetup and last minute planning. I know Jim will be having time off and heading to CO. But our timing is off. I’m in Ouray CO when Jim start his journey out west. Jim left on Friday night heading toward CO. By Sunday morning, I got a text from Jim said he arrived Ouray. I was starting to breakdown my camp because it’s my checkout day. I need to checkout from Amplitheater Campground by 11am. After packing up, I meet up with Jim. I have no plan for the day. We decide to run Imogene Pass. Here is the start of next several days of awesomeness.
The next few days, I got to experience
1. Meet/hang out with new friends.
2. Awesome food.
3. Awesome Trail running in Ouray, Silverton & Moab. I learned a lot.
4. Awesome camping spot in CO & UT.
5. Epic scenic.
Part 12
As we travel north to Salt Lake City Utah, an unschedule stop to visit a museum. As a cruiser fan, I must stop at this museum prior to heading east.
This museum was a great stop. There is a huge collection of all kind of Toyota Land Cruiser on display. Not just display, these land cruiser actually drivable. The history of Land Cruiser actually on display here. I’m like a kid walking into a candy shop. Drooling over all kind of history, expedition stories, toys and brochures of Land Cruiser.
Currently, the museum already move to a new location. The new location is a little bit north of the old location. Still easy access from the Interstate. I hope to visit the new location when I near SLC next time.
Me and Jim spend around 2 hrs at the museum before we head out separately. Jim is heading west into the salt flat and I’m heading north to Jackson WY.

Part 13 - Grand Teton NP & Yellowstone NP
I’m travel solo again and try to revisit some National Park attraction before east bound. Heading north from SLC Utah into Idaho. I’m heading to Jackson WY. I found a parking spot right next to the town square. I spend some time walking around the town square area. Jackson WY is a busy town. Lots of tourist visiting.
I head out the town to visit some attraction. I miss spending time at Grand Teton national park. I never been to Mormon row and Chapel of Transfiguration. I take this as opportunity to scratch off the list. I also stop at Jenny Lake and hike near the lake shore. My luck with wild animal is not connected. I didn’t see much wild animal while in Grand Teton NP. As it’s getting late, I opt to stay a night near Grand Teton NP. I found a camp spot in Bridger-Teton National Forest with a vista view of Teton mountain range. As I’m prepping dinner, I can see a storm brewing nearby. What a great lightning show to enjoy.
Part 14
Part 14 - Yellowstone NP & Beartooth Highway
I take the time to drive around Grand Loop rd in Yellowstone NP. I detour to the North entrance just to visit Roosevelt Arch. Also, I try to fuel up outside the NP for cheaper gas price. I took a lunch break at Gardiner MT, next to the Yellowstone River. Watching rafter having fun on the river.
I return back to Yellowstone NP and proceed to exit the NE entrance. This road lead to Lamar Valley, where I can see a bunch of

Buffalo roaming in the valley. I have a few close encounter with Buffalo which is awesome. I just sit inside my vehicle and enjoyed the Buffalo roam by.
After exit the park, I took a long detour to Beartooth highway. I never drive this scenic highway before. The drive was scenic and fun. Lots of hairpin turn. Climb high to around 11000 fts and back down to the valley. I’m now in MT, but I don’t want to drive I-90. I swing east/south back into Cody WY.
I arrived Cody WY late afternoon. I just stop at Albertson market and reload some supplies before heading out. Got more foods and drinks. My next destination is to get closer to Devils Tower National Monument.

Part 15
I pushed my driving from Cody to Gillette WY the night before. I sleep at a rest area on I-90 outside of Gillette WY. The driving from Cody to I-90(Buffalo WY) pass through BigHorn National Forest. If I’m not trying to get closer to Devils Tower, I would have find a great spot to camp here. I can tell this area has awesome camp site and beautiful scenic.
I’m very close to Devils Tower National Monument. It’s my goal to visit this area. I arrived before 9am and the gate still unmanned. The weather didn’t hold up. It was raining. Wish I can stay more time and hike around. But the rain keep me from doing longer activities.
I keep on moving east. I’m crossing the stateline to SD. I start to notice tons of biker on the highway. Curious and find out it’s biker weekend rally at Sturgis SD. I can’t say no for a great chance to just drive through Sturgis. Spending 45 mins driving through Sturgis was an experience.
I continued my eastbound journey after Sturgis SD and found Wall SD. I got to stop at this area and be tourist. Found a good parking spot. It was crowded. I walk around enjoying some weirdo display and reading some cool history. This stop is a must stop if you travel through I-90 in SD.
I didn’t stop at Badland National Park this time. I got less than 2 days to reach home, so I step up the pace.

Final
Final - SD, MN, WI, MI, OH, PA, NY, CT & MA
Final stretch of the trip. I stop at the I-90 rest area near camberlain SD. Visit the statue “Dignity of Earth & Sky” and the museum. Continue eastbound and pass by Mitchell SD. I prefer to just drive through as I have visited the corn palace in Mitchell SD before.
There is no stopping in MN, but I do love to stop at the SPAM museum in Austin MN. Timing is off so I drove straight through till WI. I make a last min decision to drive through upper Michigan Peninsula instead of taking the more direct route through IL. I'm glad I did this.
I try to drive as much as I can stay awake. I sleep at a gas station/truck stop in WI (Near Marinette WI). In the morning, I entered MI. This is my 48th state to travel by vehicle. While driving through upper peninsula in MI, my truck reach a milestone of 200k. I stop a bit at mackinaw bridge area.
