Aftermaths/Gotchas of 2017 Camping trip

No camping trips is perfect.  We have to travel 3500+ miles each way to get to/from the camping destination.  As a handy mechanic, I make sure all my vehicle and trailer is top notch shape before the departure day.  I have spend numerous weekend prepping the vehicle and trailer to be roadworthy.

Here is a few gotchas from our 2017 Camping trip.

  1. Pop-up camper problem on Day 1.  My pop-up camper lost a battery cover and also Wheel hub cover.  Battery is exposed and do not have protection.  Bearing hub exposed and can be contaminated by rain, dust or dirt.  Luckily, I discovered the problem during a routine rest stop.  After careful inspection, I try to limb to the next exit (8 miles ahead).  There is a walmart at this exit.  I stop at Walmart and purchased a battery box, grease gun and grease.  I can't find wheel hub cover.  Proceed to the next store, Home Depot.  Home Depot is not carrying the parts I'm looking for, but the clerk help me and direct me to Autozone.  Autozone is located at the next exit, 5 miles ahead.  Went to Autozone and found all the parts.  I start my repair at the Autozone parking lot.  I'm able to reinstall the wheel hub back and lube up the system from the grease gun.  We continue with cautious.  Stop at the next rest area and inspect the trailer.  No problem found.
  2. Pop-up camper trailer brake wiring disconnected in MT.  While visiting friends in Roundup, MT, the trailer brake wiring is loose/disconnected.  Our friend saw some wiring dragging below the trailer.  Upon closeup inspection, it was the trailer electric brake wiring.  The connection probably got disconnected while driving down the dirt road.  With help from our friend, we are able to re-splice the wiring and wrap with electrical tape.   This actually help our journey since we will need to travel up to Alberta (the canadian rockies).
  3. Driving down dirt/bumpy road with trailer is fun, but we have some device got loosen and drop off.  One of the device is the level gauge.  This was not important to the trailer function, but important to level the trailer during tent pop-up.  We left this repair until returning home.
  4. On our eastbound journey, we hit a severe weather before Edmonton.  While driving TC16, my cell phone alert me regards tornado watch in the area.  My decision to continue and try to avoid the severe weather area was a good one.  There is confirmation that a tornado touchdown nearby Edmonton.
